GoldFact: The 1933 Double Eagle became the most expensive coin in the world in 2002 when it was sold at Sotheby's auction house in New York for $7.2 million. The coin had survived a gold meltdown in the US, after which it fell into the hands of an Egyptian King and was then discovered by undercover secret service agents in New York.
